Welcome to Godzone

Godzone is an independent New Zealand travel guide started in 1998.

Slowly but surely getting there. I’m updating all content over 2018 aiming to have it complete before the New Zealand summer of 18/19. The website is essentially a personal reference for my trips to New Zealand where I focus on tramping (hiking) and visiting places of natural, historical and cultural significance.

Other Websites

As I live in Amsterdam and have German family, I’ve created a Dutch version DeWandelaar.nl (The Wanderer) and a German version DerWanderer.de. Voorenna.nl, has been created for trade customers, as a way to manage data (so I don’t spend too long in front of a computer) and as a beta release site that tests upcoming changes and additions.

Recent Changes

DOC Campsites were added in June. Google changed search engine description length from 300 to 150 characters which means I’ve been working on a way to manage updating these data changes more efficiently. With 700 listings so far in 4 languages, it was time consuming updating each manually, so I’ve automated the process speeding things up tremendously. All listings are now importing XML feeds which means I only update data on one site and it flows to the rest.

Current Work In Progress

Google had announced changes to maps, so I’ll be working on maps soon. They might look a bit strange occasionally but should work. I’ve added categories for Independent Holiday Parks and Backpackers, now that the templates, data and updating is sorted out I’ll look at adding more of these in the coming months. I also need to clean up things like vineyards and museums and add a whole lot of cosmetic stuff like footers and 404 pages…

I’m going to give sitting behind a computer a break and get tramping, in late August I’ll start work on non-listing content like the travelog, gear reviews and writing things like a history of New Zealand.

Example Content

Below is some example, random content found within Godzone. Currently there are DOC Campsites, Visitor Information Centres that include i-SITEs and DOC Visitor Centres, Holiday Parks including the TOP 10 network, Hostels including the BBH backpackers and YHA youth hostel groups. Use the map on this page or the navigation at the top of the page to look around. If you’ve got any comments or suggestions let me know, otherwise, enjoy!
